Sleep Health Institute is a telemedicine practice specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. Led by Dr. Helene Emsellem, a board-certified neurologist with over 40 years of experience in sleep medicine, the practice provides expert consultations via secure video visits to patients throughout the region.
After completing our online sleep questionnaire and scheduling your appointment, you'll receive a link to join a secure video consultation with Dr. Emsellem. You can participate from the comfort of your home using a computer, tablet, or smartphone with a camera and internet connection. The appointment functions just like an in-person visit, allowing Dr. Emsellem to review your history, discuss your symptoms, and develop a treatment plan.
Initial consultations are $495, and follow-up visits are $275. Dr. Emsellem does not participate in any insurance plans. A detailed receipt (superbill/HCFA) can be provided that you may submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Many patients with out-of-network benefits receive partial reimbursement.
To become a new patient, please complete the online sleep questionnaire. This comprehensive assessment helps Dr. Emsellem understand your sleep concerns and medical history. After the questionnaire is received, the office will contact you to schedule your initial consultation.
Yes, Dr. Emsellem can arrange home sleep testing using the WatchPAT One device, which is an FDA-approved home sleep apnea test. This convenient option allows you to complete your sleep study in the comfort of your own bed. The device is shipped directly to you with easy-to-follow instructions, and the data is personally reviewed and interpreted by Dr. Emsellem. In-lab testing may be arranged in certain circumstances. Dr. Emsellem will recommend the appropriate testing based on your specific symptoms and concerns.
Dr. Emsellem diagnoses and treats a wide range of disorders of sleep and wakefulness, including insomnia, obstructive and central sleep apnea, snoring, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, jet lag, parasomnias (such as sleepwalking, sleep talking, and night terrors), REM sleep behavior disorder, and the full spectrum of sleep-wake disorders in adolescents, adults, and the elderly.
Common signs of sleep apnea include loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, witnessed pauses in breathing, excessive daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, difficulty concentrating, irritability, and waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat. Obvious symptoms are not always present, and unexplained fatigue and non-restorative sleep may be signs of underlying sleep apnea. If you or your bed partner notice these symptoms, scheduling a consultation with Dr. Emsellem is recommended.
Insomnia treatment typically begins with cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which is considered the first-line treatment. This approach addresses the thoughts and behaviors that interfere with sleep. Depending on your specific situation, Dr. Emsellem may also recommend sleep hygiene improvements, relaxation techniques, and medication when appropriate.
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological condition characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs, often accompanied by uncomfortable sensations. Symptoms typically worsen in the evening and during periods of inactivity. Treatment may include iron supplementation if levels are low, medications that target the underlying neurological mechanisms, and newer neurostimulation devices.
Dr. Emsellem works with patients to understand the extent of sleep apnea present, the impact on health and lifestyle to determine the most appropriate treatment option for each individual. CPAP is just one of many treatment options.
Follow-up frequency depends on your diagnosis and treatment plan. Patients starting new therapies, such as CPAP or medications, typically have a follow-up within 4-6 weeks to assess progress and make adjustments. Once your condition is stable, follow-up visits may be scheduled every 6-12 months or as needed.
Yes, Dr. Emsellem can manage and refill sleep medications for established patients. Please contact the office at least one week before your medication runs out to allow time for processing. Some controlled substances may require periodic appointments for continued prescriptions, as required by law.
